Rare Blue Diamond Breaks World Record Price

April 26, 2013Blog

In London England, a gorgeous rare blue diamond has sold at auction for about $9.6 million dollars according to auctioneer Bonhams. This is equivalent to about $1.8 million dollars per carat, thus breaking the world record for value purchased per carat on any diamond.

Originally crafted by Italian jeweler designer Bulgari in 1965, the bright blue diamond is set in a diamond ring and is 5.3 carats. The high cost is due to the diamonds rare colour. The diamond described as “fancy deep-blue”, with itensity of colour comes from less than 1 percent of all diamonds mined according to Bonhams.

Of course there are other unique diamond colours such as red diamonds. Designer jewelry brand Graff Diamonds purchased this beauty. What would you do if you owned this rare blue diamond?

Auction On Napoleon’s Engagement Ring To Josephine In Paris On March 24

March 19, 2013Blog

March 24 is a special day for historians and jewellery collectors as the engagement ring that French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte gave to his first wife Empress Josephine will be part of an auction at the Osenat Auction House in southern Paris.

The two were wed on March 9, 1796, eight years before Napoleon was crowned Emperor of France. At the time of the proposal, the soon-to-be Emperor had little money to spare, and as a result, the engagement ring is considered “a very ordinary one” according to jewellery experts. This could explain why the Auction House expects the rare 18th century ring will sell for approximately $20,000.

Despite being considered ordinary, the ring is made of two one carat gems and designed in antiquated beauty. One of the gems is a clear diamond, the other is a blue sapphire – and both are equally cut into teardrop shapes nestled next to each other.

The marriage between Napoleon and Josephine was popular in France, and remains topical in various history books. Napoleon spent the first few years of their marriage at war, leading the French armies against other nations. Throughout this time, Napoleon sent love letters back to his bride in order to convey his passionate feelings – an excerpt of one will be displayed with the engagement ring at the Auction House.

“I am going to bed with my heart full of your adorable image. I cannot wait to give you proofs of my ardent love. To live within Josephine is to live in the Elysian Fields. Kisses on your mouth, your eyes, your breast, everywhere, everywhere.”

All jewellery collectors are invited to take part in the auction, and bid for a jewellery piece that represents history, passion, and above all, beauty.

Toronto Couple Gets Engaged By Rolling Up The Rim

March 15, 2013Blog

Canadian coffee drinkers are wrapped up in the Roll Up The Rim contest, eager to spend a few dollars for the chance to win cash prizes, a shiny new barbecue, or even a Toyota Rav4s.  However, Jaimie Baisley is likely the only person to roll up the rim and ‘win’ a diamond engagement ring.

Jaimie has dated her now fiancé Jeff Chapman for over a year with both of them being Tim Horton’s coffee lovers.  Jeff woke Jaimie in their bedroom on Saturday March 9 with two cups of coffee, and the couple spent the morning watching TV together.  Jaimie finished her cup and rolled up the rim, but luck was not on her side.  Jeff then handed Jaimie his cup and suggested she roll up his rim to see if she would have better luck.

“It looked like he already rolled it up, so I wasn’t expecting anything.”

Jaimie not expecting anything was the whole point.  Jeff had rolled up the rim before getting back to the apartment and inserted a small piece of paper that read ‘Will you marry me?’ hidden underneath the rim.  Jaimie admitted that she was shocked, but the shock turned to excitement when Jeff then went the traditional route – he got down on one knee and pulled out the engagement ring.

Jeff says Jaimie had been expecting a proposal for some time, and he knew he didn’t want to propose in a clichéd location that she would expect.  He decided to use their mutual love of Tim Horton’s and the Roll Up The Rim contest to his advantage because as he says:

“I wanted to guarantee her the biggest win of all.”

Gucci Watches Helps Send Kids To Grammy Camp

February 8, 2013Blog

Will you be watching the Grammys this weekend?  This year’s event will mark the 55th anniversary of the Grammy Awards, and the third year that the Grammys parent company the Recording Academy, is in a partnership with Gucci Timepieces.

The arrangement has helped create the Gucci Grammy watch, which includes a bold leather wrist strap – featuring the gramophone symbol of the Grammys displayed on the cuff – and a stylish stainless steel case.

However, this year’s partnership extends beyond the customized watch.  Gucci will help the Recording Academy discover talented young singers to participate in the Grammy Camp, a special summer camp for high school students with a passion for singing.

Gucci will help find 10 exceptionally talented teenage singers, who will have an opportunity to travel to New York or Los Angeles for the Grammy Camp this summer.  The camps are meant to help gifted students sharpen their musical talents by working with professionals in the music business.  These experts will serve as mentors for the young campers in order to teach how to write music, and how to record songs in a studio.  At the end of the summer, students will sing in a special concert to show off everything they learned throughout the camp.

Timepiece and jewellery designers are constantly looking for new charities and good causes like the Grammy Camp to support, and we would love to hear about more ideas.  Visit our Facebook page to tell us what other good causes our designers can participate in, and hopefully we can help more people fulfill their dreams.

Spring Jewellery Predictions

February 4, 2013Blog

Winter may be sticking around for a few more months, but that hasn’t stopped us from finding upcoming jewellery designs for the spring.  The season of rebirth and rejuvenation is rife with brightness and colours, so it makes sense that the renewal season’s jewellery will be both bold and vibrant.

Many jewellers will craft pieces that represent ancient tribes such as turquoise gemstones, which ancient civilizations believed changed colours based upon the health of the wearer.  These kinds of gemstones were considered one of the first gems mined in ancient history, and it was believed they had the power to protect wearers from evil influences.

Necklaces and chains are also expected to be a popular item this spring, especially pieces that are lined with bright colours.  Beads, bracelets, and rings made of material such as rope or leather also have potential to take the spring market by storm, and in line with the spring theme – the brighter the better.

Fashion gurus expect Egyptian apparel will be stylish this spring, and includes dresses that are emblazoned with golden trinkets that model after ancient styles.  Golden studded jewellery around the neck, on the wrist, or even in the form of anklets also compliments the bold dresses adequately.

Do you think these are good selection for the spring, or would you look for something different?
